Ocean Backpackers is a family run hostel situated in the heart of a picturesque Harbour town, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, suitable for solo travellers’ groups and families who want quality, comfortable accommodation at affordable prices. We offer a comfortable and spacious communal lounge and dining area full of games and books, and with USB ports. We also have a restaurant standard, well equipped kitchen and we offer free tea, coffee & squash. We are open for online bookings from April to October and all year round for private, group hire.
We are always looking for ways to improve our eco credentials and are committed to minimising our environmental impact over the next few years. Our building is very old and in a conservation area, so we must be realistic about the constraints of our plans.
Energy consumption at Ocean Backpackers:
Water: Most of our hot water is generated by solar panels on the Hostel roof. We have plans to convert all our shower valves and basin taps to self-closing ones, as and when we update them. This saves up to 80% of water compared to conventional shower systems; this also reduces our energy consumption
Lights: Motion sensors and timing meters control all the of the lights throughout our stair well and hallway and most of our lights now run-on LED
Heating: We have recently installed have two efficiency, A grade combination boilers, that will be compatible with converting to hydrogen when the time comes.
Recycling at Ocean Backpackers: We encourage all our guests to use the recycling facilities available throughout the building. We endeavour to use environmentally conscious suppliers & products
Linen: We wash and dry our own linen and use eco settings where possible.
Cleaning products: We use Bio-cleaning products; a range of natural, biodegradable cleaning products which are less harmful to the environment or our staff.
Toilet paper: We use recycled toilet paper with no plastic packaging throughout the hostel.
Administration: We operate a paperless booking system.
Plastic Free North Devon: We subscribe to Plastic Free North Devon https://plasticfreenorthdevon.org/contact
